Washington, D.C. — Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC) will host Druid, Ireland’s most celebrated theatre company, and their critically acclaimed production of Waiting for Godot. Directed by Tony Award-winner Garry Hynes, Druid’s production of Samuel Beckett’s absurd, anarchic masterpiece will make its regional premiere at the Lansburgh Theatre (450 7th Street, NW) from April 17 through May 20, 2018 before it travels on to Chicago.

On a bare road in the middle of nowhere, two world-weary friends await the arrival of the mysterious Godot. While lingering by the side of the road, killing time with hat tricks and half-remembered stories, Estragon and Vladimir ponder life’s most profound and primitive questions. Samuel Beckett’s anarchic exploration of time teeters on the edge of despair but is tuned with his unique blend of poetry and humor. It is regarded as one of the most significant plays of the twentieth century, a masterpiece that draws endless interpretations.

Druid’s production, which visits Washington as part of an international tour, has been widely praised for its humor and accessibility. Winning acclaim from audiences and critics alike, it was hailed as “exceptional…the freshest, funniest, most affecting production of the play you’re ever likely to see,” by the Irish Times.


Garry Hynes co-founded Druid Theatre Company in 1975 and has worked as its Artistic Director from 1975 to 1991 and from 1995 to date.

From 1991 to 1994 she was Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre, Dublin. Garry has also worked with the Gate Theatre (Ireland); the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Court (UK), Center Theatre Group, Second Stage, Signature Theater, Manhattan Theater Club, the Kennedy Center, the Mark Taper Forum and the Spoleto Festival (USA).

Awards include: The Joe A. Callaway Award (New York) for Outstanding Directing for The Cripple of Inishmaan by Martin McDonagh (2009); She won a Tony Award for Direction for The Beauty Queen of Leenane in 1998, and is a recipient of many other theatre awards, including The Irish Times/ESB Irish Theatre Awards for Best Director for DruidShakespeare, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Waiting for Godot and a Special Tribute Award for her contribution to Irish Theatre (2005). Garry has also received Honorary Doctorates from the University College Dublin, University of Dublin, the National University of Ireland and the National Council for Education Awards and most recently she was made Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland, and she is a member of the Honorary Council of the Royal Hibernian Academy (HRHA).

In 2011, Garry was appointed Adjunct Professor of Drama and Theatre Studies at NUI Galway.

Francis O’Connor (Scenic and Costume Design)  Francis is a regular collaborator with Garry Hynes and Druid. His designs for plays, musicals and opera have been seen in Ireland, the UK, throughout the US, Europe, and Asia and his work with the Gate Theatre (Ireland) has frequently been seen at Spoleto Festival. Druid began as a bold idea: to create Ireland’s first professional theatre company outside of Dublin. There were few resources with which to build a theatre company in the west of Ireland in 1975, but, through sheer dedication, and with the support of the Galway community, founders Garry Hynes, Marie Mullen and Mick Lally made this bold idea a reality. That reality has become an international success story of extraordinary dimensions.

The company has won international acclaim and countless awards, including four Tony awards for Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane on Broadway.

Druid is a company that continues to pursue bold ideas, from presenting the entire canon of Synge plays in one day (DruidSynge), to professionally debuting new work such as The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh and The Walworth Farce by Enda Walsh, to adapting and staging four Shakespeare plays in one production (DruidShakespeare) and taking them across Ireland and the Atlantic, to New York and beyond.

Druid passionately believes that audiences have a right to see first class professional theatre in their own communities.  Since 1975, the company has performed in over 100 Irish communities, often returning to locations dozens of times, developing enduring connections with audiences. We have presented work at international arts festivals, in municipal theatres, community halls, yards, bars and iron age forts, always looking for new ways to present our work and connect with our audience.
