STC wins preliminary injunction in Lansburgh lawsuit

I am pleased to announce that yesterday the D.C. Superior Court ruled in favor of the Shakespeare Theatre Company at a hearing relating to STC’s lawsuit against Lansburgh Theatre, Inc. This is a victory for not only STC but also for you — our patrons, supporters and the people of Washington, D.C., who have shown their unwavering support during this time.

The Lansburgh Theatre is an invaluable part of our organization and our commitment to this city, enabling us to provide imaginative and world-class theatre and to continue our valuable work in education. This outcome of the hearing ensures thousands of students the opportunity to see a play, as well as secures our ability to provide a home to a diverse range of community partner performances and empowers us to make theatre accessible to a multitude of theatregoers.

Yesterday’s ruling granted immediate injunctive relief enforcing STC’s rights under long-standing and clear agreements to occupy the theatre in the Lansburgh building, STC’s home for more than 20 years.

In early January, both parties will meet to discuss next steps and determine whether the order should be expanded.

With this new measure of protection and security for STC, we look forward to continuing to promote artistic excellence in our home at the Lansburgh. All performances will continue as scheduled, and we hope to see you in January for our production of Eugene O’Neill’s Hughie starring Richard Schiff.
