Druid’s WAITING FOR GODOT through the eyes of Teen Critics

Every season a group of High School students participate in STC’s Teen Critic program. These students attend the productions, participate in workshops and craft critical reviews reflecting their unique perspectives on the performances.

As this season’s young critics reach the end of the year they were challenged to think about other forms of reviewing. They were given the task to make a short digital review. Their imaginations were able to guide their way as they expressed their thoughts on Waiting for Godot.

American Theatre Senior Editor Diep Tran reviewed the Teen Critics’ submissions and the winner received a yearlong membership to TCG and a subscription to American Theatre.

Winner! Pria Dahiya, Junior

Diep Tran says: “Ask any critic what is the hardest review to write and they will tell you: the mediocre review, the review about the show that you didn’t love but you didn’t hate either. How do you capture the feeling that can only be described as: ‘meh’? Pria Dahiya’s hilarious review of Waiting for Godot did just that. In only 2 minutes, using three different personalities, she successful articulates both what she loved about the play, what she hated, and (as most great reviews do) left it to the audience to make their own decision about the work. Bravo Pria!”

Runner Up: Ester Luna, Freshman

Diep Tran says: “When judging the entries, I took into account strength of analysis and creativity. Ester Luna’s review combined the whimsy of simple cartoons with probing analysis. It was almost Beckettian! She did more with figure drawings than most critics do with 1000 words.”
