Our Path Forward

At Shakespeare Theatre Company, we are practicing the best preventative measures—staying at home, social distancing, and avoiding mass gatherings. As our workspaces and theatres remain closed, we have had to make changes to the rest of the season.

Our presentation of Wise Children’s Romantics Anonymous has been canceled and our spring production of Much Ado About Nothing has replaced As You Like It in the 2020/21 Season. Ticket holders will be contacted by the Box Office to find the most suitable arrangements for them. The June and July performances of Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience – A Parody by Dan and Jeff and Chamber Dance’s New Works 2020 have been postponed and new dates will be shared as soon as we are able.

Perhaps the biggest impact of this crisis is that we will not be able to produce this summer’s Free For All production of The Comedy of Errors. We are saddened to have to press pause on what would have been our 30^th anniversary of presenting free Shakespeare for the community.

The loss of programming, rentals, and other special events has affected our meaningful revenue.

We are finding our way forward through the incredibly successful Phoenix Fund, named after the mythical bird reborn from the ashes. One of our generous board members is offering a matching grant of up to $1 million dollars. In less than three weeks, the Phoenix Fund has already raised over $500,000. Many patrons have donated their tickets back to the theatre in support of STC. We are immensely grateful for the outpouring of support from our patrons and donors.

In Richard III, the hero Richmond says “True hope is swift, and flies with swallows’ wings” before vanquishing his foe in battle, ending a civil war, and leading to a time of promised peace and prosperity.
