Hardly gentlemen, friends Valentine and Proteus are rivals in love, competing for the beautiful Silvia’s favors while Julia, Proteus’ forgotten lover, hopes to win back the man of her dreams. As Valentine and Proteus play out their misguided games of courtly love, their servants Speed and Launce test their own mettle in a hilarious battle of wits. This comic tale of wandering hearts captured by an intelligent woman is one of Shakespeare’s most romantic comedies. Douglas C. Wager, former artistic director of Arena Stage and a 2000 Helen Hayes winner for his direction of Animal Crackers at Arena Stage, makes his Shakespeare Theatre debut with a cast that includes company members Ralph Cosham, Floyd King, Andrew Long and David Sabin, joined by Julia Dion, Donald Corren, Naomi Jacobson, Paul Whitthorne, Gregory Wooddell and Anne Louise Zachry.
