On hearing the news of the death of his son, Hotspur, the Earl of Northumberland joins forces with those of the Archbishop of York and prepares to advance against the King’s army. As the King’s health deteriorates, the young Prince Hal distances himself from his old friend Falstaff and accepts the burdens and duties of his royal position. Shakespeare examines concepts of honor, duty, law and the struggle between the public and private man as the mantle of kingship passes from father to son.
