Description: Explore the integration of voice and language while deepening your understanding of the creative power of your own voice. Through a broad range of exercises, students will explore the complex links between breath, thought, emotion, voice, and language, while increasing their ability to utilize safely and effectively an expressive, powerful, and fully embodied voice either onstage or in daily life.

Essential Question: What are the vocal tools a speaker or performer needs?

Course Objectives: Participants will explore and synthesize basic voice and speech skills and concepts through warm-ups, group and partner exercises, readings, and presentations.

Course Outcomes: Participants will be able to…understand the process for creating effective vocal communication and apply that process to their own communication.

Enduring Understandings: Effective, engaging communication requires relaxed, imaginative preparation.

Joy Jones is an actor, teaching artist, and native Washingtonian. Locally, she has performed at Arena Stage, Studio Theatre, Theater J, and Everyman Theatre. Her regional acting credits include the Denver Center, Huntington Theatre, et al. She has taught at STC since 2012. Previously, she taught for Young Playwrights Theatre, Ford’s Theatre and others. Joy has an Acting MFA from UNC-Chapel Hill, a Theatre BA from UVA, a Certificate in Classical Acting from the British American Drama Academy, a Certificate in Arts in Education from the Actors Fund, and a Certificate in Curriculum Development from UNC-Chapel Hill.
