Plunge into scene work using in-depth text analysis, focusing on contemporary text. Through concentrated partner work discover techniques professional actors use to develop character and make bold, dynamic choices under the guidance of STC teaching artist Renea Brown.

Essential Question: How do we most effectively tell clear, honest stories?

Course Objectives: Participants will analyze contemporary texts, exploring the characters, relationships, objectives, and stakes that bring the stories fully to life.

Course Outcomes: Participants will be able to confidently navigate modern works, viscerally connecting with the material in order to tell powerful and important stories.

From the Syllabus:

Week One: Introduction of class, instructor, and students. Performance of monologues and one-on-one discussions of goals and objectives.

Week Two: Table work of first assigned scenes.

Week Three: Scene work, exploring basic acting values as well as relationships, backstories, and physical dynamics.

Week Four: Table work of second assigned scenes.

Week Five: Scene work, exploring basic acting values as well as relationships, backstories, and physical dynamics.

Week Six: Final exploration of all scene work, thoughts on continued work moving forward.

 Renea Brown has been an actor for 20 years, primarily focusing on Shakespeare the last 10. She has played over 35 Shakespearean characters professionally, including: Lady Macbeth, Titania, Jacques, and Cassio. She has performed at Shakespeare Theatre Company, Folger Shakespeare Theatre, American Shakespeare Center, Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, Island Shakespeare Festival, Arena Stage, Round House Theatre, The Kennedy Center, and others. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre at the University of Louisville, and a Masters degree from STC’s Academy of Classical Acting at The George Washington University. She is also the proud owner of Box o’th Bard, where she makes Shakespeare themed gift boxes!
