STC Internships & Fellowships: Meet Jessica and Max

Day 5 of Intern/Fellow Week. Apply for an internship or fellowship at STC today!

Introduce yourself!

I’m Jessica Skelton and I am one of the two Stage Management Interns. I am basically the 4th member of the stage management team with duties that range from making coffee, to being on book for actors, and generally assisting the rest of the stage management team with various responsibilities.

Jessica enjoys the Opening Night party for A Midsummer Night's Dream. Photo by Jon Harvey.

Favorite movie growing up and why.

Dumbo, because I love elephants and I always found the story incredibly sweet! Mrs. Jumbo was my favorite movie mother figure.

Most rewarding moment so far at STC/why you’re glad you work here.

While working on A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I had a few actors who expressed how much they really appreciated my help. I always like to think of the stage manager as the “actors’ friend,” as I was once taught to do. Of course, it’s always nice to be appreciated by people, but for me, it is especially nice to feel that I have done my job in making the actors feel more at ease.

Coolest place you’ve visited/thing you’ve done in D.C.

I’m from the area, so I admit that I don’t do much sightseeing, but actually living in the city has given me the chance to do a lot of walking around, just taking it all in, which I love!

Piece of advice for applicants.

If you’re like me, you may have worked a lot at different places, but they may have been smaller theatres. If you’ve never worked at such a large company, just be ready for an adjustment period. Be confident going in and work on your multi-tasking skills prior to the internship, because you will have a lot placed on your plate. It may be tough at first, but you will get used to the “big theatre” atmosphere.

Introduce yourself!

Max Reinhardsen, Acting Fellow. Wearing heels and holding spears for ensemble roles at STC.

Max creeps backstage in his costume for A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Favorite movie growing up and why.

Muppet Treasure Island, because it’s the greatest contribution to film probably ever.

Most rewarding moment so far at STC/why you’re glad you work here.

Making something out of small parts, being part of a smart, talented group of actors, making dope connections. Dope like cool…

Coolest place you’ve visited/thing you’ve done in D.C.

Monuments! Toki underground!

Piece of advice for applicants.

Be prepared to get comfortable in the background.
