Hillarie Shockley: Properties Intern. I work alongside the other members of the prop shop building the various prop pieces and set dressings.

Favorite movie growing up and why.
The cartoon Cats Don’t Dance. I still love the characters and the songs plus it was the only movie that I would rewind and watch again and again as a kid.
Most rewarding moment so far at STC/why you’re glad you work here.
I’ve learned so many new techniques and skills here and I have grown so much as an artisan. One of the best parts was being able to turn wood on the lathe and for my supervisor to be visibly impressed by my work.
Coolest place you’ve visited/thing you’ve done in D.C.
National Portrait Gallery: amazing works of art spanning multiple styles and eras. That plus any of the local markets to shop around.
Piece of advice for applicants.
Go for it. I never thought I would be able to get this internship and here I am; it’s surprising what wonderful things can happen if you try for them.

Hey there, I’m Jeremy Owens, the Electrics Intern at Shakespeare Theatre Company. My job is mostly about prepping for all the shows that happen in both the Harman and the Lansburgh, helping to hang and focus those shows, and designing the lighting for artists who come weekly into the forum space of the Harman.

Favorite movie growing up and why.
My favorite movie is Fight Club. You can watch that movie over and over and each time see the scenes in a totally different light once you know the ending.
Most rewarding moment so far at STC/why you’re glad you work here.
I’m glad to be at STC for a lot of reasons. One, it’s helped to expand my knowledge set to something far beyond what college provided me. Two, the people you meet working on electrics are the best in D.C. The job connections you’ll make are great, and the people themselves are wonderful to be around. Third, working at STC, you’re treated like a real individual. You’re in a place where they understand that you’re knowledge set is still limited, but are more than willing to help you learn more. You’re not just a worker bee like many other internships can turn out to be. You’ll work, for sure, but the feeling that you’re part of a very well oiled machine is always there.
Coolest place you’ve visited/thing you’ve done in D.C.
There’s so much to do in D.C. The food is awesome (and there’s so much to explore, especially around the Harman and Lansburgh area) but my favorite part is definitely the museums. There are so many to visit, and almost all of them are free. Who doesn’t love free art!!
Piece of advice for applicants.
Although you’ll get to work your design muscles a little each week, I would not mistake this for a design internship. The majority of the work you’ll do, and the majority of opportunities that will be available outside the normal schedule, are technically related. If design is your aim, I would suggest looking at smaller theaters where those opportunities arise more often. If you want to grow your technical knowledge and skill set, work alongside fun and very intelligent people, and learn how one of the best regional theaters in D.C. operates, this an internship you definitely want to apply for.

Kevin Collins, Education Intern. I assist in making sure Shakespeare is fun and interesting to students of all ages, and not scary like we sometimes make him out to be. Unless it’s Zombie Shakespeare. Zombie Shakespeare would be terrifying.

Favorite movie growing up and why.
Probably a tossup between All Dogs Go to Heaven and Surf Ninjas. Even though All Dogs Go to Heaven is a little bit subversive, it’s still a heartwarming story. Surf Ninjas, on the other hand was, and still is, hilarious and action packed.
Most rewarding moment so far at STC/why you’re glad you work here.
It’s incredibly rewarding every time I get in to a classroom or see a student’s eyes light up when they click with Shakespeare. His text is dense and complicated, but once students have the tools to break it down and make it their own, they can do anything.
Coolest place you’ve visited/thing you’ve done in D.C.
Getting to see all the exciting theatre in the DC area has been great. The theatre scene here in D.C. is so vibrant and exciting, and being able to take part in it has been a very unique experience. Also, going out and exploring all the various neighborhoods and their unique personalities has let us see a different side of D.C. other than political and monumental side one normally thinks of.
Piece of advice for applicants.
Get out and be a part of the city. There are hidden gems everywhere; you just have to go looking. Get to know as many people as you can, and be genuinely interested in them. Opportunities could come from anywhere.
