Cuban Coolers

CUBA LIBRE

The Cuba Libre cocktail came into fashion during the American Intervention (A.K.A. Spanish-American War) of 1898–1900. It is named for the Cuban Liberation Army.

1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
2 ounces white rum
Coca-Cola

Pour lime juice and rum into a tall glass packed with crushed ice. Fill with Coke. Stir well.

DAIQUIRI

A favorite of John F. Kennedy’s, invented in Santiago de Cuba for southern miners who had run out of gin. Still served at Havana’s Restaurante Floridita.

2 ounces Havana Club (white) Rum
¼ ounce Maraschino liqueur
1 ounce fresh lime juice
2/3 ounce sugar syrup

Shake briefly with a glassful of crushed ice, and pour unstrained into a frosted cocktail glass. Serve. For the “Hemingway Daiquiri,” take a triple shot with no sugar and a quick blast in a blender.

PRESIDENTE

Created during American Prohibition in the 1920s and named for President Gerardo Machado. “The aristocrat of cocktails and preferred by the better class of Cuban.” (Basil Woon)

1-1/2 jiggers dry vermouth
1-1/2 jiggers lemon juice
2 dashes grenadine
2 dashes curacao
5 jigger rum
3/4 cup cracked ice
orange peel

Shake all ingredients with cracked ice. Strain into chilled glasses and decorate with a twist of orange peel.
